Taken from the Lidderdale Centennial Book:
Jans and Elizabeth Peters were married in 1896. They came from Oldenburg, Germany, to the United States and settled around Lidderdale, Iowa, in 1901. They were brought over here by petition from John Knute of Glidden. John had come over six years earlier. With Jans and Elizabeth came four children: Derk, Jacob, Anna and John. They worked on different farms as laborers. They moved to a farm two and 1/2 miles south of Lidderdale to the "Haselton farm". There were 16 more children were born: Emma, Hannah, Hilda, Louise, Mary, Fred, William, Henry, Herman, Alva, Edna, Albert, Lawrence, Roy, Lillian and Warren. They all went to country school. At one time there were forty students with one teacher for eight grades. They attended St. John's Lutheran Church, active in the church-Elders, choir, Sunday school teachers, etc. There were twelve sons and eight daughters. They had their own ball team known as the "Farm Ball team". They had their own ball diamond in the pasture. They played against the Lidderdale town team. "Red" Leonard Briedert pitched for Lidderdale and Herman and Alice pitched for the farm team. Lidderdale was their main town-grocery store (Jack Rohen), post office, telephone office, garages, gas stations, churches, creamery and booming town. Skinners Tavern and dance hall was a gathering place, dancing, etc. The bans included Subberts's band, and who ever could play an instrument or piano, then Cecilia and Her Little Giants, lots of polka bands and square dancing. Aunt Lillian Braden and husband Boyd were the last of the Peters family with their wedding dance at Skinners. Seven other members of the Peters family held their wedding dances there. The Peters family loved singing and dancing. Elizabeth Peters and daughters were wonderful cooks. They were also barbers (so many talents). With that many boys in the family, Hilda and Edna cut all the hair. The large table was always set and ready for the grandchildren. Lots of big pots of coffee and many cakes and homemade bread.Everyone was welcomed. It was one big family and many wonderful memories. I am Marian "Toni" (Peters), Jacob's daughter. There were six children in our family: Lenora,Heinie, Malinda, Marian, Dorothy and Vernon. I am married to Bud Irlmeier from Templeton, Ia. We have four children: Jim married Peg Clark, Monty married Pat Bromert, Karen married Steve Olberding and Lori, Married Dennis Gregory.
