August Dietrick Onken, the eldest son of Dietrick and Theda (Mahrings) Onken was born in Funnix, Ostfriesland, German, in 1865. He was three years old when his parents came to America. After two years in Illinois the family moved to Sheridan Township, Carroll Co. Iowa. He attended the Sheridan School and then engaged in farming which was his life's work. In 1888 he married Emma Wenck, the daughter of Christian and Mary (Rabe) Wenck. Their children were: one daughter (Bessie), Mrs Henry Schroeder, Three sons, William C., Elmer F. and Lester D. Onken. August was a member of Immanuel Lutheran. He was interested in the affairs of his community and served as a director of the township school for many years. August died in 1937 and Mrs. Onken in 1944.
