(June 15,1926 - October 24, 2016)Vernon C. Holtapp - age 90, of Bennington, Nebraska, formerly of Pomeroy, Iowa passed away Monday, October 24, 2016, at the Life Care Center of Elkhorn, Nebraska. Vernon Charles Holtapp was born June 15, 1926, near Pomeroy, Iowa. He was the son of William and Martha (Janssen) Holtapp. Vernon graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1944. He was drafted into the Army in 1945. He served during W.W.II in Washington D.C. at Fort Meyer, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant with clearance in the Pentagon. Vernon and Faye farmed near Pomeroy for nine years before Vernon took a job with the Council Bluffs Mail Terminal. He moved on to the post office rail service, sorting mail between Omaha and Chicago on the train. In 1969, Vernon asked for and was given a position at the Fort Dodge post office, where he held several positions, including Civil Service Commissioner. He then retired from the postal service in 1985, but continued to farm for several years. His family has many beautiful items that he made with his woodworking skills. In November 2015, Vernon and Faye moved to the Omaha, Nebraska area to be close to their children. Vernon was a life-long member of the St. John Lutheran Church and a member of the AMVETS. During retirement, Vernon enjoyed playing cribbage and many happy times with family at their cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Survivors include his wife, Faye of Bennington, NE; children, Paul (Linda) Holtapp of Bennington, NE, Beverly (Larry) Dietrich of Omaha, NE and Bill (Jana) Holtapp of Omaha, NE; son-in-law, Terry Loots of Burlington; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Lois (Keith) Keleher of Palmer and Lorna (Jerome) Kleen of Gilmore City; brother, Harold (Patricia) Holtapp of Pocahontas and brother-in-law, Dean Ashbrook of Pomeroy.
