Shirley M. Carter, age 87, of Pomeroy, passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at the Gardens at Luther Park Community in Des Moines, Iowa. Shirley Marie Bangert was born June 13, 1931, in Palmer, Iowa. She was the daughter of Adolph and Pansy (Duitsman) Bangert. Shirley graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1949 and went on to get her RN Degree at the Evangelical Deaconess School of Nursing in Marshalltown. She worked in Marshalltown for one year, before she decided that she and a group of her friends were going to take a train to Long Beach, California, where they began working at Seaside Hospital. Shirley met and married George Carter and to this union, two children were born, Janice and Gary. The couple later divorced. Upon returning to Iowa, she moved to the farm north of Pomeroy and worked as a Registered Nurse at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge for 38 years. Shirley was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Ladies Society and various other clubs in Pomeroy. She enjoyed knitting, cross-stitching, reading, gardening and cooking and baking. Survivors include her daughter, Janice Bergman of Norwalk; son, Gary (Ruth) Carter of La Porte City; seven grandchildren, Carrie Shellnut-Bergman, Krista Jones, Laura Ellis, Joshua Carter, Jeremy Carter, Nathan Bergman and Holly Carter; six great-grandchildren, Odin, Brody, Blake, Jordan, Piper and Vivian and sister, Jean Ellen (Elwin) Holtap of Lakewood, Co.
