Vera Maxine Welander
(May 8, 1932 - September 18, 2018)Vera M. Welander - age 86, of Pomeroy, passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Vera Maxine Doyen was born May 8, 1932, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was the daughter of Hie H. and Marie (Behrends) Doyen. Vera graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1950. Vera married Paul Welander on October 1, 1950, in Pomeroy. The couple lived in Fort Dodge and Knoke, before moving to Pomeroy. In the early 1960’s, the couple settled on the family farm north of Pomeroy. Vera and Paul moved to town in 1991. In addition to helping on the farm and raising their family, Vera worked for several years as a detasseling foreman and for the Pomeroy Cleaners. Vera was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She had an avid love for playing cards and was a member of several card clubs and served as a pollster at election time. Vera enjoyed sewing, gardening, watching both sports and racing and spending time with her family and friends. Vera always made sure you didn't leave her kitchen table without being full.
Survivors include her son, Doug (Linda) Welander of Clermont, FL; daughter, Judy (Leon) Homeister of Holland, IA; daughter-in-law, Roxanne Welander of Pomeroy, IA; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Maurene Fick of Trenton, MO and Geraldine Clancy of Pomeroy and three sisters-in-law, Pauline Doyen of Fort Dodge, Roberta Doyen-Allison of Storm Lake and Beverly Welander of Pomeroy. Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; son, Jim; brothers, Raymond H. and Donald Doyen; sister, Buelah Smith and brothers-in-law, Walter Smith, Leo Clancy, LeRoy Olson, Kermit (Garnet) Welander, Roland Welander and Elmer Fick.
