Maxine A. Barker
(January 7, 1925 - October 4, 2018)Maxine A. Barker – age 93, of Altoona, formerly of Pomeroy, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston, Iowa. Maxine Alfreida Schwandt was born January 7, 1925, in Rogersville, Missouri. She was the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Steffen) Schwandt. Maxine obtained her GED and went on to graduate from St. Vincent Nursing School. Maxine married Ralph Barker on October 24, 1955. The couple lived in McCook Lake, South Dakota, where Maxine worked as an LPN and Ralph as a Truck Driver. In the early 1960's, the couple moved to Pomeroy, Iowa, where they settled. Ralph passed away in 2003. Maxine continued to live in Pomeroy, until moving to Altoona in 2009. Maxine was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, reading and pets; not just the typical pets of dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits and goats, but also ferrets, hedgehogs and Vietnamese pigs. Survivors include her daughters, Judy (Jerome) Huseby of Siren, WI and Debra Moe of Altoona; step-son, Ralph Barker Jr. of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Connie (Mark) Wiegel, Cara (Daren) Weier, Jasmine (Ben) Ahrens, Ryan Barker and Abby Barker and six great-grandchildren.
