Tillie A. Mathiasen
(July 31, 1920 - January 24, 2020)

Bertilla "Tillie" A. Teyen-Mathiasen - age 99, of Pomeroy, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Center in Manson, Iowa. Bertilla Ann Korwes was born on July 31, 1920, in Roselle, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry and Anna (Meiners) Korwes. She attended Roselle schools and went on to graduate from Fonda High School in 1938. On June 30, 1941, Tillie married Lawrence Teyen in Fonda. The couple settled in Pomeroy where Tillie did painting and wallpapering. While her children were growing up, she served as a housekeeper for Fr. Larry McCarty, worked at the Pomeroy Bakery and as a cook at St. Mary's Catholic School. Her husband Lawrence passed away in 1979. On July 11, 1981, Tillie married Kermit Boll in Pomeroy. The couple settled near Harlan where Tillie tended several large gardens and sold her produce at Farmers Markets. In Harlan she also worked at a restaurant and did catering work. Kermit passed away in 1994. On July 6, 1996, Tillie married Robert Mathiasen in Harlan. The couple lived near Harlan where Tillie continued her gardening. Bob passed away in 2009. Tillie continued to live near Harlan until 2016, when she returned to Pomeroy. Tillie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Thomas Catholic Church and was a past member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan. She was an active church member. Tillie enjoyed gardening, baking and reading. Most of all, Tillie loved the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter, Carol (Merlin) Meyer of Pomeroy; step-children, Mike (Mary) Mathiasen, Kathy (Jack) Fenske and Mark (Bev) Mathiasen; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons and brothers, Joe Korwes of Des Moines and Gilbert (Mary Lou) Korwes of Spirit Lake. Tillie was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Lawrence, Kermit and Bob; daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Jerry Marsh; great-grandson, Ty Marsh; five sisters and four brothers.
