Alice Ann Fitzgerald
(July 11, 1941 - December 30, 2019)

Alice Ann Fitzgerald - age 78, formerly of Pomeroy, Iowa, passed away at Windmill Manor in Coralville, Iowa, on Monday, December 30, 2019, surrounded by her family. Alice was born on July 11, 1941, in Storm Lake, Iowa. On November 24, 1941, she was adopted by Frank and Blanche (Hood) Cain of Manson, Iowa. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School and Pomeroy Community School. On September 5, 1959, she was united in marriage to Raymond Fitzgerald of Clare, Iowa. Alice and Ray had six children, Margaret, John, Matthew, Christopher, Theresa, and Bridget. They lived in Clare and then Palmer, until moving to Pomeroy, where they lived for many years. Alice spent her life caring for others, feeding them in her restaurant, Old Home Cafe in Pomeroy or as a certified medication aide at nursing and group homes. She retired in 2011 from Opportunity Living, an Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) for intellectually disabled adults in Rockwell City, Iowa. Family commitments, love, and laughter were Alice’s highest priorities. She was deeply proud of her children and loved spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alice was a wonderful cook and loved craft work. For many years, she made cakes for family and friends’ graduations and weddings, and she created beautiful silk flower arrangements for showers and weddings. Alice was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pomeroy, where she was an active member of the Altar Society. Alice loved music and had a beautiful voice. She ensured that the church had a steady stream of musical support from her children and grandchildren who sang and played instruments at masses for decades. Alice moved to Coralville, Iowa, in 2015, and spent several years at the Windmill Manor retirement and care facility, where the doctors and staff lovingly supported her through difficult years of dementia. She became a beloved member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville. Alice’s surviving family are thankful for the blessings she provided and includes her children, Maggie (Dean) Jesse of North Liberty, Iowa, Matthew (Sheryl) Fitzgerald of Omaha, Nebraska, Christopher (Peggy) Fitzgerald of Webster City, Iowa, Theresa (Kevin) Benjamin of Chicago, Il. and Bridget (Leon, deceased) Barba of Oxford, Iowa, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, her parents, Frank and Blanche Cain, her son, John and her son-in-law, Leon Barba. Copyright Lampe & Powers Funeral Home, (712) 464-7665, www.powersfh.net
