Allen Neweton Sumner
(March 14, 1860 – May 22, 1934)

Allen Neweton Sumner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Sumner, was born in Hamilton County, Ind., March 14, 1860. When he was only four years old, his parents with their children, moved to Monroe, Iowa. Here Mr. Sumner went to school, made friends and grew to manhood. In 1882 the family moved to a farm near Rockwell City. On Oct 15, 1887, Mr. Sumner was united in marriage with Sarah Jane Gregg and to this home seven children were born; Leta and Fern of Rockwell City, Byron of Rinard, Jesse of Wilmington, Cal., Mary Hanswirth of Havelock, and two who died in infancy. Mr. Sumner with his wife reared their family on a farm near Rockwell City where they lived 41 years. He was a friend to many and helped in many charitable ways. He was a charter member of the Odd Fellows, lodge No. 529 of Rockwell City. The last seven or eight years while living on the present farm, he had been unable to work very much. A heart attack about a week ago cut his days on earth short and he passed away May 22, 1934, at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 8 days. He leaves to remember his love and many kindnesses his dear wife, the children, two sisters, Mrs. Dora Workman of Rockwell City, Iowa, and Mrs. Ella Roush of Draper, S. D.; three grandsons and three granddaughters, many other relatives and a host of friends.
