George S. Knapp
(July 4, 1847 – March 9, 1935)

Obituary – George S. Knapp
George S. Knapp, the son of Charles and Sarah Knapp, was born at Newton, N. J., July 4, 1847, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. B. Treman of Rockwell City on Mar. 9, 1935, aged 87 years, 8 months and 5 days. At the age of seven he moved with his parents to a prairie farm in Muscatine County, Ia. Here he grew to manhood. At the age of 20 he united with the Mr. Hermon Presbyterian church in Melpine community, the church which his father had helped to organize and in which he was ordained as an elder. It was privilege of his son to be ordained in this same church to this same office in 1890. On Jan 21, 1874, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Blessing, who preceded him in death two years ago. They had enjoyed the long period of 59 years together at the time of her death and now he rejoins her after this short period of separation. For a few years he and his wife lived in Adair County, Ia., but returned for a while to the old home place near Muscatine to care for his parents and the business of the home place. In 1899 they moved to Dexter, Ia., and the following year they purchased a farm near Churdan in Greene County where they resided for six years. Twenty-eight years ago they moved to Rockwell City and Mr. Knapp has made his home here ever since. He united with the local Presbyterian church on June 9, 1907. He has lived an exemplary Christian life, having been devoted to his family, his work and his church. As an elder he continued to serve wherever he was located, including our own church in Rockwell City when he retired from active service a few years ago. He was also interested in the Sunday school work and served both as superintendent and teacher as long as he could. He had been in poor health for the past two or three months but no one knew that the end was so near. He became bedfast only a few days ago and passed suddenly and quietly to his rest on Saturday afternoon. We can be thankful that he was spared a long and confining illness. His life had been lived, and he was permitted far more than the Psalmist’s three score years and ten. We cannot help but feel the Psalmist’s note of triumph when he speaks of God’s in the 91st Psalm – “With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.” There remain to mourn his loss, two brothers, D. S. Knapp of Hot Springs, S. D., and Charles of Berkeley, Cal.,; two sons, Arthur O. of Chicago, Ill., and Ralph S. of Aurora, Mo., and two daughters, Mrs. Bessie LeGore of Emmetsburg and Mrs. Elberta Treman of Rockwell City. There are also a large number of other relatives and friends who feel keenly his departure.
