Obituary – Gottlieb Cirks
After an illness of about a year, Gottlieb Cirks passes away Wednesday evening of last week at his home on Calhoun Street, Manson, Iowa. For the past year he had been seriously ill at times and then would recover sufficiently so that he could be out again. Last Friday his condition became worse, and Sunday of last week he suffered a stroke that left him completely paralyzed. Mr. Cirks was born March 14, 1862, in Rieke, Ostfriesland, Germany, a son of Dick and Dorothy Cirks. As a young man he came to America and was married in December 1890, to Grace Meyer at Minonk, Illinois. To this union were born eight children, five of whom preceded their father in death. After living in Illinois for twelve years the family came to Iowa. They lived in Lizard Township, Pocahontas County, seven years then moved into Lake township, which was the family home for the next 21 years. Ten years ago Mr. Cirks came to Manson to live. Ten years ago this summer, July 31, 1923, he was married to Mrs. Meta Hinrichs, and since that time they have made their home in Manson where Mr. Cirks will be missed by his many friends. Mr. Cirks is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy A. Janssen and Mrs. Julia O. Hinrichs; and one son, Christian; four stepsons, Robert, Henry, Ommo and Eimo Hinrichs; and three stepdaughters, Mrs. Deborah Johnson, Mrs. Alma Abens and Mrs. Lena Schroeder, all of whom live in the vicinity of Manson. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and sixteen step grandchildren; one brother, Eike Cirks of Lake Township in Pocahontas County; and one sister, Mrs. Frank Denekas of Minonk, Illinois. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at 1 o’clock at the house and 1:30 at St. John’s church at Lizard on Saturday, June 24, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.
