(October 17, 1869 – March 3, 1931)

FRED BOLDES
Fred Boldes was born in Breslan, Germany, in 1870. He received his education in his native land, was graduated in 1883. He was educated for a musical career, but drifted into mercantile pursuits, in which he met with gratifying success. Mr. Boldes emigrated to America in 1883. He first located in Hartford, Conn., and in 1885 came to Marshalltown, Iowa, entering the employ of Pappe Bros., dealers in clothing who started a branch store in Lake City in 1896. He established this store for his employers and in 1902 bought them out, becoming sole owner of the business. On the 10th of January 1900, Mr. Boldes was married to Miss Bertha Block, at Atlantic, Iowa. Two sons, Lou and Alfred, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Boldes, both of whom reside with their mother at Des Moines, where the family located about a year and a half ago, after disposing of the business here. Mr. Boldes became associated with Gorman’s Inc., manufacturers of hats and ties, and was vice president of the concern at the time of his death, which occurred Monday, March 2, 1931, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital, where he had submitted to an operation on Sunday, the shock of which was too great for his heart which had been diseased for three years. Funeral services were conducted on March 4 from the Dunn Funeral Home and were largely attended by former Lake City friends. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines. During his many years of residence in Lake City, Mr. Boldes was recognized as an able business man, who was always ready to lend his support toward any civic enterprise, and many evidences of this influence for good in the community are manifested in various ways, and will always remain as a reminder of his days among us.
