October 10, 1931 - May 17, 2014)Roland "Rollie" Welander, age 82, passed away on May 17, 2014, at his home in Pomeroy. Roland Hedman Welander was born on October 10, 1931, near Pomeroy. He was the son of Harry and Hazel (Hedman) Welander. Rollie was educated in area country schools and Pomeroy High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his discharge, he returned to Pomeroy and began farming North of town and was still farming until the time of his death. On January 24, 1960, Rollie married Beverly Sonksen at the Lutheran Church in Ayrshire. The couple made their home on the farm until 1994, when they moved into Pomeroy. Rollie was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the AMVETS and had been on the Pomeroy Co-op Board. He enjoyed traveling in his spare time. Survivors include his wife: Beverly of Pomeroy; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law: Harlan (Trudy) Sonksen of Mallard, Beverly Sonksen of Laurens and Vera Welander of Pomeroy; many nieces and nephews and many many friends. Rollie was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Hazel Welander, brothers, Kermit and Paul, brother-in-law, Arnold Sonksen and nephew, Jim Welander.
