Lula Lou Holtorf
(October 12, 1916 - May 11, 2010)Lula Wilhelmina was born on Oct. 2, 1916, in rural Pomeroy. She was the last surviving child of Edward and Mamie Gaedke Gutz. Lula was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was raised on the family farm, educated at Immanuel School and graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1934. Lula attended Iowa Teachers College where she received a teaching certificate. She taught Sherman No. 4 country school for four years. Lula married Gus Holtorf on June 1, 1938. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the WELCA. She was a founding member of the Maverick card club of which she was a member for fifty years. Survivors include Helen (Kenneth) Axman, Pomeroy, Ruth Clancy, Fort Collins, Colo., Dean (Martha) Holtorf, Pomeroy, Dennis Holtorf (Stephanie), Reno, Nev., nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Lula was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Martin, Loren and Donald Gutz, sisters Marie Haack, Viola Schultz and son-in-law Dan Clancy.
