Bess E. Gertz Gehrt - age 89, of Pomeroy, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010, at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, Iowa. Bess Evelyn Good was born November 12, 1920 at Lehigh, Iowa. She was the daughter of William and Mae Good. She graduated from Lehigh High School in 1938. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught in rural schools in Webster county for six years. In March of 1945, Bess married William Gertz Jr. The couple farmed northwest of Pomeroy until his death in 1964. Bess then taught for three years at the Lutheran Parochial School in Pomeroy. She attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where she earned a BA degree in Elementary Education in 1967. In 1969, Bess married Clarence Gehrt. She taught second and first grades at Pomeroy Community School for fifteen years. She had a great love for youngsters and her teaching proved it. She retired in 1982. She and Clarence spent their winters in Weslaco, TX. Bess was a member of the First United Church of Christ at Pomeroy. She taught Sunday School, was secretary for many years for the Women's Fellowship of the church and served on the church board. She was a member of the Manson Legion Auxiliary and Pomeroy Garden Club. Survivors include her husband, Clarence; daughter, Janet (Dick) Layman of Pleasant Hill; step-daughters, Karen (Richard) Schwardt of Pomeroy and LaDonna Norris of Mason City; step-son, Roger (Kathy) Gehrt of Pomeroy; a granddaughter, Meredith Layman; six step-grandsons; brother, Joe Good; sisters, Mary Podlisak and Lillian Schultz all of Lehigh. Bess was preceded in death by her parents; husband William Gertz Jr.; sister, Ruth Carpenter; an infant sister and two infant brothers.
