Donald W. Roese, age 92, formerly of Pomeroy, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at MercyOne Hospice Care in Johnston, Iowa. Donald William Roese was born October 1, 1930, to Bill and Gertrude (Gaedke) Roese in Pomeroy, Iowa. He grew up in Pomeroy with his sisters, Pauline (Krueger) and Mary Ann (Jespersen). After graduation from Pomeroy High School in 1948, he joined the Army and served in the Korean War. After serving, he attended American Institute of Business (AIB) where he earned his associate degree and met the love of his life, Jodi Mitchell. They were married July 10, 1955, in Grinnell, Iowa. They moved back to Pomeroy in 1957 to make their home and raise their four children. Don worked for Pomeroy State Bank until his retirement in June of 1999. Don remained in Pomeroy until he moved to an assisted living facility in Altoona in April 2019. Don was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Pomeroy. He served as president of the Pomeroy School Board and was instrumental in getting a new gymnasium and classroom for the school. Don was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs. He liked to attend the Iowa boys and girls state basketball tournaments and always made new friends while attending. Don also enjoyed golf and was proud of his two hole-in-ones. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends and always remembered them by sending a birthday, anniversary, sympathy, get well or a heart-felt thank-you card. Don also liked to sing, play the harmonica. and watch for birds on his many bird feeders. Don is survived, lovingly remembered, and greatly missed by his children: Pam (Steve) Wilcox of Vacaville, CA, Steve (Barb) Roese of Johnston, Lisa (Glenn) Ware of Highlands Ranch, CO and Mitch (Beth) Roese of Newton; grandchildren: Amy (Tim) Cutterson of Dixon, CA, Beth (Taylor) Roese of Tampa, FL, Scott Roese of West Des Moines and Alex Ware of Highlands Ranch, CO and his sister, Mary Ann Jespersen of Atlantic. He was preceded in death by his wife Jodi, his parents, sister Pauline and brother-in-law Harold Krueger, and brother-in-law Richard Jespersen. Don’s family wishes to thank all the clergy, family, friends, and health care workers who supported him throughout his stay at Altoona Care Center. Each and every visit, card, letter, phone call, care package and gift was so very precious to him. A special thank you to MercyOne Hospice staff for their amazing, loving care and compassion during his last few weeks.
