Roy A. Schoon, age 86, of Pomeroy, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Sunny Knoll Care Center in Rockwell City, Iowa. Roy Allen Schoon was born July 17, 1936 in Clare, Iowa. He was the son of John and Catherine (Buck) Schoon. He graduated from the Pomeroy High School in 1954, then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in the Korean War. After Roy’s military service, he attended Iowa Central Community College, completing a degree in medical tech. In 1965, Roy married Linda Bruggeman in Lake City, Iowa. The couple lived in Lake City where they raised their children. Roy worked as a lab tech at the Lake City Hospital for over 10 years until the family moved to Cedar Falls where Roy attended the University of Northern Iowa. After a year in Cedar Falls, the family returned to Lake City. Roy sold Morton farm buildings for a short time until he began work at the Howard Activity Center Inc. in Sac City, Iowa, where he worked for over 20 years. At Howard’s, he worked in the human service department helping the disabled with financial matters and working on residential programs. On June 23, 1990, Roy was united in marriage to Joyce Schultz. The couple made their home in Pomeroy. Roy retired in 2000. Roy and Joyce later moved to an assisted living facility in Rockwell City. Joyce passed away in 2020 and Roy continued to make his home in Rockwell City. Roy was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, past president of the congregation, past member of the church committee, he taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of the AmVets, American Legion and a life member of the V.F.W. In his free time, Roy enjoyed reading, fishing and spending time with his family. Survivors include his children, Lisa (Tommy) Hickcox of Omaha, NE, Barbara (Kevin) Van Buren of Omaha, NE and John Schoon of Bismarck, ND; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gene (Karen) Schoon of Manson and James (Diane) Schoon of Des Moines and two sisters, Eva (William) Horstman of Des Moines and Anne Schoon of Pomeroy. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce; brothers, Glen Schoon and Gary Schoon and a sister, Joyce Becker.
