Obituary – Mrs. Mary E. Finney
Mary E. Finney, daughter of Rev. E. M. and Julia Miles, was born at Freeport, Pa., May 8, 1848, and died at her home Friday, June 18, 1937, at the age of 89. When four years of age she came with her parents to Davenport, where her school days were spent. She completed her education in the Mr. Carroll Seminary and then taught school in Nashua and Clinton counties for four years. In March 1867 she was converted to Christ and was baptized by her father in the Mississippi River. She was united in marriage on Feb. 23, 1873 with P. J. Finney, who preceded her in death Jan. 5, 1925. They made their home in Camanche, Ia., where three daughters were born: Maud, who died in April 1898, at the age of 21, Lou Nora, who died in January 1902, at the age of 20; Viola, who became the wife of Charles Beckwith in February 1909, and died a year later, leaving a baby daughter one week old. Mr. and Mrs. Finney and their family came to Lake City in 1890 and seven years later moved to Rockwell City where they made their home during the remainder of their lives. Both she and her husband were active members of the Baptist Church. Mrs. Finney is survived by a sister, Mrs. William Osborn of Bedford; a brother, Edward M. Miles of Lake City, a granddaughter, Miss Mabel Beckwith of Clinton; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
