Joseph Clarence Howrey
(August 16, 1852 – July 31, 1935)

Obituary
Joseph Clarence Howrey was born at Farmland, Ind. Aug. 16, 1852. In 1855 at the age of three years he came to LaPorte City, Black Hawk County, Ia. with his parents. On Dec. 22, 1874 he was united in holy wedlock to Susan Adaline Lane. In 1882 they came to Calhoun County and since that time have resided in this community and in Manson. Five boys blessed this happy union, Alvah of Havelock, Harry of Lohrville, Sidney of Manson, John of Rockwell City and Lloyd, who preceded his father at the age of 6 ½ years. Mr. Howrey joined the Congregational Church at the age of 32, being a member for 51 years. He was emersed in South Twin Lake. May 29, 1932, while still living in Manson, he suffered a stroke and on Sept. 28 Mr. and Mrs. Howrey moved to the home of their son, John. Last summer they spent three months in the home of their son, Harry and wife at Lohrville, returning to the John Howrey home in October. On Dec. 10 he suffered another stroke and since then had been bedfast, the last three weeks growing gradually weaker and on July 31 at 1:20 p.m. he quietly passed to the great beyond where he had longed to many times to go. He was a good Christian, devoted husband and loving father, a patient sufferer, always saying, what pleases you pleases me. His grandchildren were the pride of his heart. Mr. Howrey was 83 years old at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn besides his wife four sons, Alvah, Harry, Sidney and John, and five grandchildren, Mrs. Arthur Voss, Walter, Beulah, Leroy and Leonard Howrey, one brother, Calvin of Waterloo, one niece residing at Manson, Mrs. Lela Wright, who spent considerable time with Mr. and Mrs. Howrey and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church at Manson on Friday afternoon. A quartet consisting of Mrs. Margaret Lowry, Mrs. Levi Johnson, the Rev. Edward Long and the Rev. Silas Wright sang “The City of Gold,” “When They Ring Those Golden Bells for You and Me,” and “The City Four Square.” Pallbearers were Charlie Arnold, John Roske, G. A. Moline, Frank Moses, Gus Vosberg and Frone Ring. He was laid to rest in the Griffeth Cemetery south of town beside his son, Lloyd.
