Sarah Frances Staton
(June 29, 1849 – August 2, 1935)

Obituary
Sarah Frances Byrd was born in Decator County, Greensburg, Ind., June 29, 1849 and passed to her heavenly home Aug 2, 1935, at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 4 days. She was united in marriage to Joseph K. Staton July 20, 1865, in Crawfordsville, Ind., Montgomery County. They moved to Iowa in the early pioneer days of 1867 in a covered wagon and settled on a farm near Sac City where they lived over 50 years. In March 1916 they moved to Rockwell City to make their home where she has resided ever since, her husband having preceded her in death Oct. 7, 1916. To this union was born 13 children, four of whom survive: Mrs. Orville Owen, Rockwell City; James L. Staton, Rockwell City; Mrs. Arthur Staton, Auburn; H. G. Staton, Alpena, Mich.; one sister, Mrs. Rena Nicholson of Lodoga, Ind., and one brother, J. H. Byrd of Indianapolis, Ind., and 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends also survive. Mrs. Staton as a pioneer mother played her part well. She always met life and its vicissitudes with iron in her spirit. She ever manifested the courage, resourcefulness and optimism of all pioneer mothers. Her home and family were her first consideration. Mrs. Staton joined the Church of Christ when a young woman and kept that faith to the end. She was a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps and one of the few remaining Civil War widows of this community. With faith in her Maker and a hero’s courage she met the approach of the invisible hour and passed to the great beyond. “He has bidden her rest for a season, for the pathway has grown so steep; He has folded her now within green pastures and given His loved one sweet sleep.” To know her was to love her. Those from out-of-town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H. Staton and family of Alpena, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Will Losure, Mrs. Lillian Riley, Mrs. Minnie Vauble, Mrs. Ella Griswold, Mrs. Charles Staton, Mrs. Drury Staton, Mrs. Bill Wagner, Mrs. Blaine Baichtal, Mrs. Ed Brown, Mrs. Sadie Staton and Mrs. George staton and Mrs. Rose Shepp of Sac City, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Staton of Marathon, Mrs. Ernest Carey and family Lohrville, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Staton of Auburn, Mrs. Harry Calhoun and Mrs. Helen Schmidt of Lytton and Mrs. Grover Wolf of Storm Lake. Mrs. Staton was laid to rest in Cory Grove Cemetery at Sac City. Source - Rockwell City Advocate & Calhoun County Republican, Rockwell City, Iowa, Thurs., August 15, 1935, p.4
