Joseph Zaruba
(September 18, 1895 – November 30, 1932)

Obituary
Joseph, son of Joseph and Anna Zitka Zaruba, was born on May 4, 1870. He came to Calhoun County in the spring of 1895 and settled on the farm three and one-half miles northwest of Lavinia, where he continued to reside for thirty-seven year. On September 18, 1895, he was united in marriage with Ellen Damstrom and to this union were born nine children: Vinnie, Mrs. George Fisher of Chisago, Minnesota; Joseph Anton of Blackberry, Minnesota; Ivan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Carl of Des Moines, Elsie and Crystal; Mrs. Kenneth Kline of Chicago, Illinois; and Marvin, Katherine and Marjorie at home.
Mr. Zaruba was stricken with a kidney ailment about three years ago and spent many weeks in the hospital. He submitted to four operations, but nothing could be done to stay the disease and he passed away on Wednesday morning, November 30, 1932 at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 26 days. He leaves to mourn his death his devoted wife, the nine children, two grandchildren, four brothers Charles, L. R. and Andrew Zaruba of Yale, Iowa and Leo Zaruba of Perry, two sisters, Mrs. John Blakely of Oskaloosa, and Mrs. Ed Kunce of Yale, Iowa.
Mr. Zaruba was a kind and indulgent husband and father and a generous neighbor. A number of his former neighbors who had moved away came back for the funeral and on every hand was heard these words: “He was the best neighbor we ever had.” The funeral was held Friday afternoon from the home and from the Presbyterian church in Lytton and was in charge of his pastor, Rev. Lindaman of Lytton. Burial was in Garfield Cemetery. Those from a distance who were here for the funeral were Mrs. George Fisher of Chisago, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Zaruba of Blackberry, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Zaruba of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Carl Zaruba of Des Moines, Elsie Zaruba and Mrs. Kenneth Kline and little daughter of Chicago, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Zaruba and two sons, Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Zaruba and son and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Zaruba, all of Yale, and Mrs. Tom Flannery and two daughters and two sons, also another son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Flannery, all of Boone, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Eaton and family of Knoke, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Eaton of St. Peter, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Claude O’Clair and children of Dickens, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Damstrom of Kalo, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Damstrom of Lehigh, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Skinner of Sac City, Mr. and Mrs. H. Sleaman of Bagley, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Patrick of Pocahontas, Mrs. Leslie Melody, Mrs. C.C. Reynolds, Mrs. George Mills and W. E. Sutton of Rockwell City, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Freetly, Mr. and Mrs. Byron McMeekin and Mrs. J. McMeekin of Lake City, Mrs. Robert Finley of Auburn, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hadley and daughter, Donna, and Mr. and Mrs. Brant McComb from the vicinity of Rockwell City and a large gathering of friends from this vicinity. Paul bearers were E. E. Skinner of Sac City, Ralph Keiser of Lytton, Sam Cox of Lytton community and Wm. Harms, Eugene Wattonville and W. A. Cook of this vicinity.
