Place of Death: Carol M. Ewing, age 82, passed away Monday, May 28, 2012 at her home following a lengthy illness.

A Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 31 at the First United Church, Farnhamville with Pastor Al Wright officiating.

Burial will be in Reading Township Cemetery, Farnhamville.

Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Gowrie.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharilyn (Shari) Everhart and her husband, Jerry, and Michael (Mike) Ewing, all of Farnhamville; grandson, Shawn Everhart and his friend, Kaylene Welty of Farnhamville; granddaughter, Shelby Wright and her husband, David of Manson; two great-grandchildren, Austyn and Ashtyn Wright of Manson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in March of 2001; sisters, Caroline Hein, Edna Wynn and Viola Luppes; brother, Eldon McCarthy; and two nephews.

Carol Margaret McCarthy, the youngest child of Everett and Anna (Steinbach) McCarthy, was born at home at Blairsburg on December 25, 1929 and was given her first name by her brother Eldon. She graduated from Blairsburg High School, Class of 1947. She came to Farnhamville as a young bride when she was united in marriage to Robert LeRoy Ewing on December 14, 1948 at the Methodist parsonage in Farnhamville. The couple farmed the family farm northwest of Farnhamville until moving into town in the late fall of 1965. In 1968, she became the first church secretary of the yoked parish of the Farnhamville Methodist/United Church of Christ-Congregational and Somers Methodist churches during the pastorate of the Rev. Merlin Ackerson. In 1971, she became employed at Cedar Valley School, first as a teacher’s aide then, as middle school secretary and later was a special needs aide at Prairie Valley School. She enjoyed knitting, picnics, bird watching, enjoyed time outdoors, was a whiz at Sudoku, word jumbles, crossword puzzles and crypto quote, and also was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. She was “Grams” to her grandchildren, “Grammy” to her great-grandchildren, and loved every minute spent with her family.

Carol was a member of the United Methodist Church/First United Church of Farnhamville, a member of the United Methodist Women, former officer of the W.S.C.S./U.M.W., a former Bible School teacher and a longtime member of the church choir. Carol was also a member of the Jr. Women’s Club, the Non-Ame Club, the Order of Eastern Star, and the White Shrine.
