Rites Held for Mrs. Emma Mather
Emma Jane Pringle Mather was born November 7, 1871 in Dayton township, Butler County, Iowa and she passed away Saturday, May 18, at the Chautauqua Guest Home at Charles City, where she had been since August of 1961.
She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pringle, pioneer residents of this vicinity, and the oldest of five children. She graduated from the Greene High School in 1888, and began teaching at once in the rural schools.
Miss Pringle continued in the teaching profession for a period of 41 years, 28 years of tht time she was employed as a primary teacher in the Greene schools, and for five years in the schools of Hendrum and Cloquet, Minnesots.
She returned to Greene and took up her work here again and continued until she retired in 1929.
Her education was received in the Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and the University of Minnesota.
On Septemeber 17, 1931, she was united in marriage with Charles M. Mather who passed away June 21, 1947.
Mrs. Mather has been a member of the Methodist Church over 60 years, also an early Sunday School teacher.
She was active in several organizations, haveing been a Rebekah for over 50 years. She was a Royal Neighbor, a memeber of the W.C.T.U., the F.C. club and P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was also an active member of the Iowa Association of Former Educators.
Survivors include one niece, Mrs. Arlene Bunting of Silver Bay, Minnesota; a step son, Dayton Mather of Greene; and other relatives.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, May 21st, at 2:00 o'clock at the First Methodist Church in Greene with Rev. Harold S. Miller officiating. Burial was held in Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
