Text of Obituary, Newspaper Unknown, obtained October 2001 from Public Library, Shell Rock, IA:
"DIED. - At his home near Shell Rock on Tuesday morning, September 11, 1883 of blood poisoning, L.A. Orvis, Esq. in the 68 th year of his age.
Mr. Orvis was born in Bradford Co., Pa. December 12th 1815. Five years after his birth, the family moved to Steuben, New York, where the son received his education in the common schools and by an attendance of several terms at an academy. He then learned the blacksmith's trade which occupation he followed for a number of years. In 1840 he was married to Miss Fanny L. Hills, and in 1841 they moved to Trumbull county, Ohio where Mr. Orvis followed his trade and farming. In 1852 he moved to Boone county, Ills. and three years later to Butler Co. Iowa, where he bought a farm on section 15 of Shell Rock township where he resided at the time of his death. He was admitted to the bar of Butler county in 1857, held the office of Justice of the peace for thirteen years and has also held several other town offices.
He was a member of Escallop Lodge No. 261 A. F. and A. M. and yesterday the brethren tenderly bore his remains to the Baptist church where services were held, Rev. J. J. McIntire officiating, after which his remains were followed to the cemetery and there buried under the impressive ceremonies of the Masonic order.
He leaves a wife and six children, - all grown to manhood and womanhood, - to mourn the loss of a kind husband and loving father. The community has lost an old and respected citizen and we are again warned that "man is mortal," and that we too must die. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathies of the entire community in their sad bereavement."
