Ruth Leavens, 95, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died early Thursday morning, April 1, 1999, at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home from natural causes.
Ruth Boers was born on March 11, 1904,in LaSalle, Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Anna Boers. At a young age she moved with her famiy to Iowa, and later settled near New Hartford, where she attended school. On February 19, 1925, she was united in marriage with Bainbridge Leavens in Waterloo, Iowa. They made their home on a farm north of Shell Rock. In 1960 Bain suffered a broken back and became disabled, but the couple remained on the farm. Bain died on August 28, 1976, and Ruth continued living on the farm until 1996 when she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly. In December of last year she moved to the Clarksville Community Nursing Home.
Ruth was a member of the Shell Rock United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She also liked fancywork,lived to cook and bake for her family and friends.
Ruth is survived by her two sons and their wives; Richand and Phyllis Leavens of Charles City, Iowa, and Duane "Bud" and Ruth Leavens of Hampton, Iowa, eleven grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, twenty-four great grand-children, and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bainbridge Leavens on August 28, 1976, two great granddaughters; five brothers, Charles, Edward, Louis, Albert and LeRoy Boers; and five sisters,Elsie Walters, Anna Sterling, Lela Crabtree, Clara Adair, and Meta Shellington.
