John Ahrens was born 1835 Mecklenberg, Germany to Jacob (Jochim H) and Maria Ahrens. Emigrated w/ parents 1853 to Davenport, Scott Co, IA. Moved to Boylan's Grove, Pittsford, Butler, IA 1855. Cannot find him in the 1860 census at Pittsford but he should have been living in the area.
Enlisted September 29, 1861 with Company E, 12th Regiment of Iowa to fight in the Civil War for the Union side. Died as a prisoner of war at a Civil War Camp at Macon, Georgia on September 25, 1862.
