They made their home in New Hartford and Elta worked at the switchboard for the New Hartford Telephone Company, a position she held off and on until the 1960's. On January 16, 1987 James died and Elta continued living in their home until ill health caused her to become a resident of the Maple Manor Nursing Home on April 3, 1992.

Elta and Jim loved fishing and spending time in Wisconsin, sharing many fishing days with their children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, canning her produce and playing cards with family and friends. Elta had been an active member of the Women's Relief and the Anchor Rebekah Lodge in New Hartford.
