James L. Rogers, 85, of New Hartford, Iowa, died Friday evening, January 16, 1987, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington, Iowa, following complications of old age.
James was born on February 3, 1901, in Boone, Iowa, the son of James L. and Edna Scoville Miller. He attended Woodbine High School and at the age of 17 he went to work for the Illinois Central Railroad as an agent and telegraph operator, working in Rockwell City, Wall Lake, Iowa Falls, Waterloo, and Fort Dodge, Iowa, before he was united in marriage to Elta D. Lamb on September 20, 1933, in Galena, Illinois. They moved to New Hartford in 1934. James served as Treasurer for the City of New Hartford for 8 years, and served a 4 year term as Mayor. James retired from the Illinois Central in 1967, where he had worked for 50 years, the last 33 years in New Hartford. In October of 1984, James became a resident of the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington.
He was a member of the Beaver Masonic Lodge #472 A.F. & A.M. in New Hartford. He was initiated on April 18, 1941, passed on May 21, 1941 and was raised to Master Mason on June 19, 1941 and went on to serve as Worshipful Master in 1950. He was also a member of the Scottish Rites of Cedar Rapids, Charter Member of the Iowa Odd Fellows Lodge #3, and a member of the Anchor Rebekah Lodge #46 of New Hartford.
He is survived by his wife, Elta of New Hartford, three daughters, (Dorothy) Mrs. Wayne Ballhagen of New Hartford, (Edna Mae) Mrs. Lester Truex of New Hartford, (Betty) Mrs. Warren (Bill) Grove of New Hartford, ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one brother, Harold Miller of Lynwood, Calif., four half brothers, Kenneth Miller of Texas, James Miller of Evansdale, Raymond Miller of Calif., Bob Miller of Waterloo, three half sisters, Lucille North of Texas, Majel Wilcox of Arizona and Betty North of Waterloo, and an uncle, Hary Moss of Omaha, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Frank and Russell.
