Ralph Wessels, 78, of Aplington, died at home Saturday, Jan. 29, of cancer.

He was born June 17, 1932, on a farm north of Aplington, son of Diedrich and Tena Klingenborg Wessels. He married Lois Mae Meyer on Jan. 26, 1951, at her parents' home in Aplington.

Mr. Wessels graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1950, then farmed north of Aplington. He attended Riesch's Auctioneer School, Mason City, and became an auctioneer. He and his wife bought the former Farm Service building in Aplington and in 1974 opened and operated the Fashion Fabrics and Furniture Store and Wessels Consignment Auction House. He was a member of First Reformed Church, Aplington, and was a church custodian for four years.

Survived by: his wife; four daughters, Cinda Langhoff and Karla (Kim) Verhelst, both of Sheboygan, Wis., Wava (Dale) Dykstra of Mishicot, Wis., and Wanda (Eric) Bruxvoort of Mason City; a son, Rodney (Bonnie) of Aplington; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Schulte of Manchester.

Preceded in death by: a great-grandson; and a son-in-law, Myron Langhoff.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington.

Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today and for an hour before services Thursday, all at the church. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, is in charge of arrangements.
