APLINGTON - Kenneth Ralph "Kenny" Mehmen, 73, of Aplington, died at home Tuesday, Dec. 7.

He was born Feb. 11, 1937, in rural Butler County, son of Jacob and Flora Meyer Mehmen. He married Judy Peterson on March 2, 1962, at First Reformed Church, Aplington.

Mr. Mehmen graduated from Aplington High School in 1956, then served in the Iowa National Guard. He was hired as a custodian for the Aplington School in 1957, and worked there for 38 years, retiring in 1995. After retirement he worked part time at Home Interiors, Aplington, for four years. He was a part-time police officer and mayor for the city of Aplington and was a volunteer fireman and taught Hunter Safety Education for 20 years. He was a member of First Reformed Church, Aplington.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, Eric (Martin Higa) of Des Plaines, Ill., and Jason (Cristine) of Aplington; a daughter, Monica Mehmen of Aplington; a granddaughter; a brother, Roland (Norma) of Parkersburg; three sisters, Betty (David) Thronson and Marilyn (David) Roelfs, both of Ackley, and Marlene (Wayne) Brouwer of Parkersburg.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Derold.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Reformed Church, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington.

Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today and for an hour before services Friday, all at the church. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel, Aplington, is in charge of arrangements.
