The Iowa Recorder, Greene, Butler County, Iowa, Wednesday, July 23, 1919

AMIABLE M. MERRIAU

Amiable M. Merriau was born at Percy, Upper Canada, on the 25th of July , 1835, and died at his home in Greene on the morning of July, 21st, just four days previous to his 84th birthday.

When a boy of eight years, he came with his parents to McHenry county, Illinois, where he lived for 18 years. In 1861 he came in Allamakee county, Iowa, and lived on a farm near Postville. This was his home for twenty years. Here he met Miss Adelia Swartz to whom he was married at Lansing, Iowa, on November 8th, 1862. For 57 long happy years these two have journeyed together. In 1881 he moved to a farm in Floyd county, near Marble Rock. Fifteen years ago, he came to Green where he has since lived.

To this home, three children were born; two sons and a daughter, all of whom with the wife survive him. They are N.A. of Greene; Mrs. Jennie Martin, Colton, S.D., and F.S. of Rayton, New Mexico. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. A. M. McKay of Seattle, Wash. There are four grandchildren, also many nephews and nieces and close friends. One nephew, Frank Swartz of Waterloo was reared in the Merriau home.

Mr. Merriau was a member of the Masonic fraternity having united at Marble Rock over thirty years ago. He joined the Methodist church at Greene several years ago. He was faithful to his church and ardent in his devotion to his fraternity. He was a joyful, buoyant spirit. Those who knew him loved him fro he had those qualities that make friends wherever he went. While we mourn his departure, we have the consolation of knowing that his life had lived its day, born its fruit and was simply waiting for the divine summons.

Services were held at the Methodist church at 3:30 today in charge of the pastor. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery where the Masonic order had charge.
