Eleanor Jean Derr, 80 years old, of rural Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, September 3, 2010, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, following a short illness.

She was born in Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of Emil John and Anna Louise (Schmidt) Roever.

She graduated from high school in Waverly, Iowa, in 1948, and attended Wartburg College, also in Waverly. On August 24, 1952, she and Rodger Curtis Derr were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Iowa. Mrs. Derr taught school for six years. She will also be remembered as a grower of produce for local vegetable markets. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence.

Mrs. Derr is survived by her husband of 58 years, Rodger, 1 daughter, Claudette (David) Hayward of Columbus, Indiana, 3 sons, Randall (Debbie) Derr of Bellbrook, Ohio, Curtis (Sherrie) Derr of Kuna, Idaho, and Steven (Michele) Derr of Savannah, Georgia, 6 grandchildren, and 1 sister, Mabel Steere of Greene, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister, and 1 brother.

Private family services were held at a later date. Memorials may be forwarded to the family.
