Naomi E. (Penny) Bigler, 81, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away August 28, 2010, at the Mercy House of Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

She was born April 9, 1929, in Cass County, Iowa, to Fred V. and Grace (Conrad) Penfold.

Penny graduated from Atlantic High School in Atlantic, Iowa, and went to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, receiving her elementary teaching certificate with a major in physical education. She married John W. (Bill) Bigler on May 21, 1949, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Penny taught school full time for three years in Bristow as well as being a mother and homemaker. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Dumont until it closed then transferred her membership to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton. Penny was very active in her church, sharing her faith by teaching CCD for many years. She was an Elkette, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Hampton Country Club where she was the women’s club champion. She was also a champion bowler in her earlier years and had a life long love for golfing, dancing and traveling especially to the Holy Land and Medjugorije. Additionally she was an avid Bridge player. She was a Cub Scout leader and was the most enthusiastic cheerleader at all of her beloved children’s activities. Penny and Bill wintered in Lake Havasu City, AZ for sixteen years.

She is survived by her husband John W. (Bill) Bigler of Dumont, son David J. (Lee) Bigler of Lakeville, Minnesota, son Mark W. Bigler of Des Moines, daughter Teresa A. (Keith) Anderson of Urbandale, daughter Angela E. (Russell) Swieter of Des Moines, son Jeffrey F. (Marnie) Bigler of Rochester, Minnesota, daughter Lisa M. (Scott) Sailer of Waukee , sister Wilma (Stanley) Embree of Atlantic, fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Penny was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Marvin Penfold and her two grandchildren, Erica & Nathan Wagner.

Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Mercy Hospice of Des Moines or of your choosing.

Visitation Details: 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday September 1, 2010 Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home 902 West Broadway St. Dumont, Iowa.

Service Details: 10:30 AM Thursday September 2, 2010 St. Patrick's Catholic Church 1405 Federal St. N. Hampton, Iowa.
