Henry John Groeneveld, age 81, a lifelong resident of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of John and Minnie (Junker) Groeneveld on July 17, 1929, in rural Aplington. At the age of 10 he endured polio which affected his walk, but never his spirit or sense of humor. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1948.

He was united in marriage to Lila Buseman on June 14, 1950 at the Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley, Iowa. To this union three children were born.

Henry worked for several years at the Aplington Bank and later on at the John Deere dealership in Aplington for 32 years. The greatest joy of his career was the 13 years he worked with the “Courthouse Girls” serving as the Butler County Treasurer.

Henry was a faith-filled member of the Aplington Baptist Church. He served nine years on the Aplington School Board. Henry loved his family and friends and doing things with them. He especially enjoyed fishing trips, traveling to Australia and cheering for his grandkids in every activity they were involved with.

Henry passed away on Friday, August 20, 2010, at his home, from cancer, under the loving care of his wife, family and Iowa Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brother-in-laws, Howard Best and Norman Buseman.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lila; two daughters, Brenda (Greg) Shine of Conrad, Iowa and Rhonda (Randy) Achenbach of Monticello, Iowa; one son, Ivan (Veronica) Groeneveld of Parkersburg, Iowa; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two sisters, Verna (Mervin) Best and June Best, all of Aplington; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at the Aplington Baptist Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, and continue for one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Iowa Hospice.
