Helen Elizabeth Fincel, age 89, formerly of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Carter and Sarah (Postma) Fincel on August 7, 1921, Alden, Iowa. In 1930 as a child Helen moved with her parents to Aplington. She received her education and graduated from the Aplington Consolidated School in 1939 as the Valedictorian. She continued her education at the Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and the University of North Carolina.

Helen worked as a clerk for the United States Post Office for 59 years. She began working at the Aplington Post Office and then finished her career at the post office in Waterloo, Iowa.

Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. She was active in Women’s bible studies and Presbyterian Women’s Fellowship. Helen’s greatest passions in life were her pets, going to antique auctions and travelling the world. Some of her travelling highlights were Australia, Paris and London. She also enjoyed traveling to New Orleans to visit family and attend Marti Gras where she loved collecting the long shiny beaded necklaces.

Helen died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at the Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Helen is survived by many cousins and special friends.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 20, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington with burial at the Oakwood Cemetery in Ackley, Iowa.

Visitation will be at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and will continue for 1 hour prior to the services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the C&W Rustic Hollow in Nashua, Iowa and the First Presbyterian Church.
