Harry Hemmen, age 89, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Harm and Grace (Rops) Hemmen on May 6, 1921, in Aplington, Iowa. He attended rural country school through the 8th grade.

On January 31, 1948, he was united in marriage to Doreen Wickers at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg. Following their marriage the couple farmed for one year by Sinclair, five years near Aplington and 24 years near Stout. Harry also worked at the Aplington Sales Barn, Farm Services in New Hartford and was employed for a number of years with Badger Chevrolet. The couple moved to Parkersburg in 1978.

Harry was a member of the Reformed Church of Stout where he had served as a past Youth Leader, Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the Parkersburg Lions Club. In his free time he enjoyed fishing. Perhaps his greatest joy was the time spent attending his grandchildren’s school activities.

Harry died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, from natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Doreen on December 14, 1983; one grandson, Jeff Hemmen on February 11, 1994; six brothers, Harm, Jake, Peter, Herman, Bert and George Hemmen; two sisters, Bessie Alberts and Hattie VanderWerf.

Harry is survived by his two sons, Arlyn (Deb) Hemmen of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Kevin (Deb) Hemmen of Dike, Iowa; five grandchildren, Monica (Dale) Hemmen-Duckworth, Shannon (Tom) Peverill, Chris Hemmen, Jason Hemmen and Ashley Hemmen; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Hemmen, Logan Peverill and Chase Peverill; one step-great-grandson, Eli Duckworth; a special friend, Berdene Schrage of Parkersburg, Iowa; four sisters-in-law, Harriett Hemmen of Aplington, Iowa, Carma Hemmen of Dumont, Iowa, Doris (Raymond) Harms of Aplington, Iowa and Byrna Stewart of Parkersburg, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the Reformed Church of Stout in Stout, Iowa.

Burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and continue for one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Reformed Church of Stout.
