Dorothy A. Adelmund, 81, of New Hartford, Iowa, died peacefully early Tuesday morning, January 22, 2008, at her home of natural causes.

She was born on April 20, 1926 in Ackley, Iowa, the daughter of Aielt & Ella (Voy) Abbas.

She attended country school east of Butler Center, and following her formal education remained in the area. On July 3, 1943 she was united in marriage to John Adelmund in Allison, Iowa. The couple lived in several communities in the area, including Parkersburg, Stout, and Dike, but lived in New Hartford for most of their years together. Over the years Dorothy had worked for the A & R Cafe in Cedar Falls, Burbridge Turkey Farm, Cedar Falls, Santa Claus Associates in Waterloo, and then Plastronics (now known as Norwesco) in Grundy Center, Iowa, where she retired from at the age of 65. For three years she and John also managed a fishing resort, Woodland Park, in Henning, Minnesota, a job they just loved. Dorothy then devoted her time to caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and loved to baby sit the great grandchildren, a job she enjoyed right up to the present. John died on April 17, 1994 and Dorothy continued to live in their home ever since. She raised large gardens over the years and enjoyed canning, especially tomatoes. Dorothy had a passion for stray cats, and would adopt them by the dozens, with 18 being the greatest number cared for at one time. Her greatest joy, though, came from caring for her family, especially the grand and great grand.

Dorothy is survived by six sons, John Adelmund of Moses Lake, WA, Allan (Marie) Adelmund of New Hartford, Jim (Diane) Adelmund of New Hartford, Jess Adelmund of Cedar Falls, Albert (Kathy) Adelmund of New Hartford, Frank Adelmund of New Hartford; three daughters, Sharon (Dennis) Hartema of Parkersburg, Barb Adelmund of New Hartford, Marilyn (Roy) Buss of New Hartford; 17 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson, and two sisters, Barbara Johnson of Parkersburg and Alda Vae (Dick) Bass of Elk Run Heights. She is also survived by her "honorary" grandchild, Tonya Schipper of New Hartford, and special friends, Nate & Mary Linda Frazee of Waverly, and Sally Schipper of New Hartford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one son, Robert; two grandchildren, Sandy & Jake, and one sister, Lillian Poppen.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 26, 2008, 10:30 am at the New Hartford Methodist Church with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, New Hartford.

Visitation will be on Thursday, from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, on Friday from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm all at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Shell Rock.

Visitation will also be on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the services.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
