Harlan William John Garbes, age 85, of rural Clarksville passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Harlan was born on March 6, 1923, in rural Clarksville, Iowa, the son of Fred and Anna (Priepke) Garbes.

He was raised in rural Clarksville and attended the Pleasant Valley Country School until the 8th grade. Harlan then started working for his dad and other area farmers. On January 1, 1947 Harlan was united in marriage to Mary Jane Whiteside in Minnesota. After their marriage Harlan took over the farming operation of his father-in-law and spent his entire life farming in rural Clarksville. Harlan also worked doing custom silo filling, feed grinding, and corn shelling. He retired in 1992. Harlan's enjoyments included Schwan's Ice Cream, International Harvester Tractors, playing guitar, playing the harmonica, music, dancing, and most of all spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Harlan's memory is honored by his wife, Mary Jane, of Clarksville, his four children, Norma (Gary) Olmstead of Cedar Falls, Linda (David) Schrock of Janesville, Darrel (Joan) Garbes of Watertown, TN, and Susan (Jay) Schrage of Allison, eight grandchildren, Troy, Terry, and Todd Olmstead, Kelly Schrock, Dawn Mason, Kurt Garbes, Jodee Pinkston, and Andrea Schrage, eleven great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, one great great grandson, two brothers, Raymond (Jeanette) Garbes of Nashua and Carl (Vera) Garbes of Clarksville, four sisters, Laura Franzen of Clarksville, Caroline Eltjes of Waverly, Ruth (Don) Fenneman of Greene, and Marlene (Bud) Mennenga of Clarksville, and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, two brothers, Albert and Frederick Garbes, three sisters, Martha Wadey, Louise Grawe, and Dorothy Kluiter, and a great grandson, Tyler Olmstead preceded Harlan in death.

Family graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 27th at the Lowell Cemetery in rural Clarksville. Burial will follow.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 26th at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly where the family will greet friends from 5 until 7 P.M.

Memorials may be made to either the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of North Iowa.
