Evelyn Hartema, age 93, of Clarksville and formerly of Shell Rock, died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Community Nursing home in Clarksville.

Evelyn was born on August 24, 1915 in rural Allison, Iowa the daughter of William and Alvina (Schroder) Weinberg.

She attended country school in rural Allison and later graduated from the Allison High School. Evelyn was united in marriage to Jerry Hartema on April 12, 1936 at St. John's Lutheran Church parsonage in Clarksville, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in the Clarksville and Shell Rock area until retiring and moving into Shell Rock in 1989. Jerry passed away in 1999 and Evelyn moved to the Community nursing home a months later due to a stroke. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church in Clarksville and the Live and Learn Club. Evelyn's enjoyments included gardening, flowers, working outside, her Allis Chalmers Tractor, playing bingo, dancing, taking country drives, and eating out.

Evelyn's memory is honored by her two sons, Marvin (Peggy) Hartema of Cedar Falls and Ronald (Susie) Hartema of Bloomington, IL; four daughters, Donna (Walter) Wilken of Plainfield, Carol (Larry) Keller of Cedar Falls, Ardith (Robert) Voigts of Clarksville, and Sharon (Darwin) Niehaus of Greene; a sister, Alvera Schoneman of Waterloo; fourteen grandchildren, Randy Wilken, Rita Ohrt, Al and Deb Keller, Brett and Jill Hartema, Heidi Andersen, Lori Edeker, Lisa Furman, Scott Hartema, Renee Feldman, Holly Wedeking, and Jeff and Brian Niehaus; twenty seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson-in-law, Scott Feldman, three sisters, Roberta Busch, Leona Van Hauen, and Helena Pagles, a brother, Wilbur Weinberg, and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 15 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarksville with Pastor Mark Walker officiating.

Burial will follow at the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 14 at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock where friends can visit between 5 and 7 P.M.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
