Robert “Bob” A. Brouwer, age 58, of Parkersburg, died Sunday evening, May 31, 2009, at his home, from small cell lung cancer.

He was born December 8, 1950, the son of Carl R. and Jessie Huisinga Brouwer in Waterloo, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1969. Robert was drafted into the United States Army in the spring of 1970 and served in Vietnam with A Troup, 4th Squadron, 12th Calvary. He was honorably discharged in December, 1971.

Robert was united in marriage with Barbara Sue Allen on February 18, 1973, in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Greene, Iowa. The couple lived for 4 ½ years in Stout then moved to Parkersburg where they currently resided.

Robert hauled canned milk for Fern Creamery for two years then in August, 1976 he started to work for Monsanto – Asgrow Seed in Parkesburg. There he was a seed processor and worked until his illness caused him to retire.

Bob was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. He showed Shorthorn Cattle beginning as a 4-H and FFA youth and continued for another 30 years. He was a member of the Iowa Shorthorn Assoc. Bob was very successful with his cattle and had many ribbons from the Cattle Congress and State Fair to show for it. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially in outdoors activities and dearly loved his grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Jessie Brouwer and one brother, Ronald Brouwer.

Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara Brouwer, Parkersburg, Iowa; His children, Heather (Brett) Huffman, Parkersburg, Iowa; Josh (Molly) Brouwer, Aplington, Iowa; Samantha (Scott) Braun, Fredericksburg, Virginia and Jim Brouwer at home; four grandchildren, MaKenna Brouwer, Haley Homeister, Jesse Brouwer and one to be; two brothers, Richard (Esther) Brouwer, Parkersburg, Iowa and David (Mary) Brouwer, Parkersburg, one sister, Linda (Randy) Williamson, Parkersburg, Iowa and sister-in-law, Karen Karsjens, Aplington, Iowa.

Funeral Services are set for 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Bethel Lutheran Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg, Iowa.

Visitation: 4-8 p.m., Wednesday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Parkerburg, and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg is in charge of arrangements.
