John Gillespie McGee was born in Montreal, Canada, April 17, 1835. He started in life by learning the trade of shoemaker at Hull. After serviving two years apprenticeship, he went to the City of Ottawa, where his parents resided, working with his father, who was also a shoemaker until he reached the age of 29. On Feb. 4, 1861, he was married to Miss Catherine Doyle, at Richmond, Canada. In 1862, they moved to Hagesville, Ohio, and from there to Iowa, locating at Butler Center, October 26, 1870, remaining there 31 years. In the spring of 1901, he in company with his wife and two youngest sons, moved to Allison, where he has been comfortably situated, living happily among his old acquaintances until the fall of 1902, when his health began to fail. After consulting several experienced physicians, but finding his case which was pronounced congestion of the liver, to be incurrable, he was made as comfortable as possible, everything that could be done, his kind, loving wife, ?, and friends.

The day finally came on Wednesday evening, July 29th at 10:00 P.M. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church on Friday at 9:00 A.M. conducted by Father Rev. Ryan and his remains laid to rest by the side of his father and mother at Coldwater Cemetery. He leaves a wife, a brother, J.A. McGee, of New York City; a sister, Miss Sherwood of Parkersburg; and seven sons; E.A. C.G. and R.B. McGee of Bakersfield, CA; J.C. McGee of Waterloo, J.I. McGee of Butler Center; F.G. and L.C. McGee of Allison, besides a host of friends, for to be an aquaintance of Mr. McGee was to be his friend.
