Mary E. Smith, age 83, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mary Elizabeth Tryon, the daughter of Harry and Luella (Robinson) Tryon, was born on December 11, 1929, in Schaller, Iowa. Growing up, she attended and graduated from Schaller High School. Next, she earned her teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa and her Bachelor’s Degree from Buena Vista University.

Mary married Michael Q. Smith. They were blessed with eight children: Timothy, Thomas, David, Daniel, Mary Pen, Theodore, Anthony, and Rebecca.

As a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Mary served as one of the original board members of the SOS store for St. Mary’s Parish. An originator of Faith Hope and Charity in Storm Lake and an active member of the Democratic Party, she also belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Elks Club. A loving mother, farm wife, and elementary teacher, she also worked many years in public health.

Valuing her family and friends above all, Mary strove to live life to the fullest. She passionately pursued all the activities she enjoyed, including playing bridge, reading, decorating, collecting antiques, volunteering, and shopping for her own flare for style, with a dedicated zeal. Additionally, she embraced and admired the arts.

Those left to cherish her memories include her children: Tim (Janet), Ted (Julie), and Tony Smith, all of Storm Lake, Iowa, David (Jane) Smith, of Hagerstown, Maryland, Dan Smith, of Yankton, South Dakota, and Penny (Charlie) Neswick, of Sioux City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Chad and Josh Neswick; Chris (Desiree), Colby (Katie), Elaine, Evan, Jason (Hollie), Lauren, Matthew, Nick, Paul, Peter, Rachel, Todd (Jen), Travis, and Tyler (Rebecca) Smith; and Magan (Mark) Taylor; her great-grandchildren: Chloe, Cooper, Emily, and Ellie Smith; Liam Johnson; and Jack Taylor; her brother, Harry Tryon, of Texas; her brother-in-law, Paul (Norma) Smith, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and her sister-in-law, Rosemarie (Benny) Winkler, of Laurens, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; extended family members; and many friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike; and her children, TQ and Rebecca.

Visitation: 4:30-8:00 p.m., August 26, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., August 27, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m., August 26, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Interment: August 27, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
