Mary Lou Petersen, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on September 5, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
Mary Lou Lessmier was born on May 5, 1932, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Fredrick and Ruth (Sliefert) Lessmier.
Growing up, she attended school in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1950.
Mary met her husband, Carl, Jr., through mutual friends. After a year of dating, the two married on September 28, 1952, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with two sons: Jerry and Terry.
Mary was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Very active in the community, she served as a Cub Scout Leader and a PTA and a homeroom volunteer. She also belonged to the Firemen’s Wives and the Ladies Sparklers. In her spare time, she enjoyed volunteering at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. She also enjoyed her continued friendship with her associates from JCPenny. She liked spending time at the Senior Citizens Center, conversing, having meals, and playing cards.
Mary treasured the time she spent with her family and friends. A passionate animal lover, she adored her pets. When she was not spending time with her loved ones, she was either traveling or enjoying crafts. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Dr. Jerry (Sondra) Petersen, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; her granddaughter, Kellie Petersen, also of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and her brother, Lael “Bud” Lessmier, of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl Petersen, Jr.; her son, Terry Petersen; her brother, Frank Lessmier; and her sister, Dona Reng.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m., September 12, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Interment: September 12, 2013, at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
