April 27, 1923 - August 14, 2013Yankton, South Dakota, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa
Loretta Voss, age 90, of Yankton, South Dakota, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on August 14, 2013, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Mary Loretta Shields was born on April 27, 1923, in Dunlap, Iowa, the daughter of Phillip and Barbara (Wettengel) Shields.
She attended St. Joseph High School, graduating in 1941. Next she attended Iowa Teachers College (now UNI), where she earned her Teaching Certificate.
On February 17, 1947, Loretta married Gilbert C. Voss in Dunlap, Iowa. They were blessed with seven children: Joe, Jack, David, Mary, Roxy, Chris, and Dan.
A very compassionate person, Loretta cared for many. She often spent time in prayer. In her spare time, she enjoyed baking, especially rolls and jams. Greatly valuing her family, she treasured spending time with them and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Joe (Diana Christopher) Voss, of Olive Branch, Mississippi, Jack (Betsey) Voss, of Lyons, Nebraska, David (Wendy) Voss, of New Brighton, Minnesota, Mary (Ron) Pesek, of Yankton, South Dakota, Roxy (Steve) Ackerson, of Des Moines, Iowa, Chris (Jerry) Muff, of Elkader, Iowa, and Dan (Beth) Voss, of Washington, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; four sisters: Phyllis (Darrell) Hansen, of Woodbine, Iowa, Charlotte Assman, of Earling, Iowa; Barbara Stracke, of Harlan, Iowa, and Mary (Ray) Wilwerding, of Earling, Iowa; as well as extended family and friends.
Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, in 1997; her parents, Phillip and Barbara Shields; an infant sister, Rosemary Shields; and two sisters, Genevieve Moore and Joanne Graeve.
Visitation: 9:00 a.m., August 17, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., August 17, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Interment: August 17, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
