Ruth M. Sabel, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died January 4, 2012, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Ruth M. Saunders was born March 16, 1921, on the family farm in rural Manilla, Iowa, the daughter of Austin and Catherine (Sowles) Saunders. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Methodist Church in Manilla.
Growing up, she attended school in Manilla, graduating from Manilla High School in 1939. Following high school graduation, she attended Iowa State Teachers College. After she received her Teaching Certificate, she taught country school.
On August 21, 1949, Ruth married Howard Sabel in Manilla, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons: Joe, Tom, and Matthew.
Ruth battled a hearing deficiency her entire life. She was the first ever Iowa recipient to receive a cochlear implant.
In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. A strong, faithful woman and a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, she worked with the afterschool church program. For twenty-one years, she loved traveling to Texas with her husband, Howard. Ruth treasured spending time with her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Howard Sabel, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Joe (Denise) Sabel, of Sisseton, South Dakota; Tom (Joyce) Sabel, of Newton, Iowa; and Matt (Laurie) Sabel, of Big Lake, Minnesota; her grandchildren: Jeffrey, Brian, Jacob, Emily, and Jamie Sabel as well as Jennifer Burkett; her four great grandchildren: Marcus, Macyn, and Kobi Sabel, and Jon David Burkett; her sister, Virginia Jorgensen, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her sisters-in-law, Zona Saunders, of Manilla, Iowa, and Rita Saunders, of Manning, Iowa; as well as extended family and many friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: James, George, Howard, Harold, Velie, and Eugene Saunders.
Visitation: 3:00-6:00 p.m., January 08, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., January 09, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: January 09, 2012, at the Storm Lake Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
