William "Bill" Toohey

Bill Toohey, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, August 8, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Bill was born on April 13, 1929, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Hannah Elizabeth “Bess” Hopkins and William Michael Toohey. He was a long time parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.
Bill graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake in 1954. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. On October 21, 1950, Bill was united in marriage to Rosemary Lea Whitcanack at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado.
Bill farmed the Toohey family’s Century Farm near Storm Lake and always took pride in providing food for people of the world. Besides farming, Bill was dedicated to serving others while working at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute before retiring.
Bill and Rosemary were very involved in the Cursillo Movement of the Catholic Church. Upon retiring, Bill enjoyed traveling with Rosemary and visiting their eight children and their families. He also teamed with Rosemary to teach English to their friends in the Mexican and Sudanese communities and Catechism to Catholic students in Schaller.
Bill is survived by his wife Rosemary and their children, as well as 27 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Bill’s family is as follows: Son Bill (Mary) Toohey of Independence, IA, and his children Colleen, Tim, and Meghann and grandchildren Katelin and Josh; Son Tim Toohey of Austin, TX, and his children Paul, Mark, Sean, and Amanda and grandchild Zayden; Daughter Cathleen (Tony) Lehmann of Dubuque, IA, and her children Sarah, Michael, John, and Anne; Daughter Maureen (Kelly) Stone of Indianola, IA, and her children Meggan, Phillip, Elizabeth, Mary, and Virginia and grandchildren Joseph, Jacob; Daughter Ann (Jeff) Selleck of Baton Rouge, LA, and her children Maria, Julia, and James; Son Thomas (Susie) Toohey of North Branch, MN, and his children Laurin, Thomas, Erin, and Patrick; Son Jim Toohey of Chugiak, AK, and his children Hannah and Bill; and Son Joseph (Jennifer) Toohey of Marine on St. Croix, MN, and his children Zach and Liam.
Visitation: 4-8:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 4:30 p.m. August 10, 2010, at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. August 11, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m. August 10, 2010, at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa
