Victor S. Sather - Sept. 1, 1918 - Aug. 4, 2010

Victor S. Sather, age 91, of Albert City, Iowa, and formerly of Franklin, Minnesota, died peacefully at the Pleasant View Home at Albert City on August 4, 2010.

Victor Sylvester Sather, was born on September 1, 1918, to Christopher and Julia (Mundahl) Sather in rural Franklin, Minnesota. His mother died when he was 18 months old, and he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Pete and Nellie Sather, until he was school age. Vic then moved to town and re-joined his dad and brothers and sisters to care for him. He was the youngest of 8 children: his three sisters: Cora, Myrtle, and Gladys and his four brothers: Ingnard, Art, Elmer, and Clarence. Vic was a graduate of the Franklin High School and then began working at the Franklin State Bank.

He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He began his service to his country on March 16, 1942, and was honorably discharged on September 15, 1945. Vic was always proud to have served his country, first as a warehouse manager in Hawaii and then as a soldier in the war zone in Siapan. He served for 3 ½ years without a furlough. His fiancée, Adelle Pauline Lawrenz waited for him to come home. They decided to get married when he was home on August 12, 1945, in Springfield, Minnesota, and they were blessed with one daughter, Gwenn Pauline.

After returning from the war, Vic worked at the Franklin State Bank until his retirement in 1986. He was a 50 year banker and his career culminated as president of the bank.

Victor was very active in the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church where he served in many different offices and taught Sunday School for many years. He was involved in his community and served on the city council. He was a member of the American Legion and the local Lions Club, serving as Minnesota Chapter Vice-chairman. He enjoyed spending time at Green Lake in Spicer, Minnesota, as well as golfing and listening and dancing to polka music.

When his grandchildren were born, Victor was a very proud grandpa and would often make trips to Iowa to spend time with them. He attended as many of their activities as possible.

Vic and Adelle lived in Franklin until 2004 when they decided to move to Albert City to be closer to their family as their health declined. While living at Countryside Living in Albert City, Vic suffered a stroke. As his health got worse, he became a resident of the Pleasant View Home.

He will be remembered as a kind and generous man who was always willing to help others. He loved his Lord and his family very much.

Vic’s life will always be cherished and honored by his family which include his daughter and son-in-law: Gwenn and Jim Ehlers of Newell, Iowa; his grandchildren: Sonya (Jeff) Veverka of Leawood, KS; Joel Ehlers of Ankeny, IA; and Emily Ehlers of Merriam, KS; two great grandsons: Joseph James and Jackson Henry Veverka; two sisters-in-law: Elaine and Dorothy Sather; nieces; nephews; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Adelle; all of his brothers and sisters; and a nephew, Bruce Lawrenz.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Franklin Cemetery in Franklin, Minnesota. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
