Rueben Burow - Sept 17, 1929 - Jan. 23, 2006

Rueben Burow, 76, of Albert City, passed away Monday, January 23, 2006, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City after suffering from cancer.

Rueben Earl Burow was born near Pomeroy on September 17th, 1929, and lived on a farm with his parents William and Elsie Burow, brothers Melvin and Lloyd and sisters Maxine and Vera. He fought overseas in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 in the Army before returning to Iowa.

He married Idris Anderson in October, 1955, in the Albert City Evangelical Free Church. Three years later their only son, Randy, was born. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Rueben primarily worked on road maintenance for Buena Vista County, retiring after 38 years service in 1991. He took great pride in his work. He was a volunteer firefighter for 21 years with the Albert City Fire Department and became an Emergency Medical Technician in 1974.

Rueben enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting, and woodworking. He was known for growing the cabbage and making the sauerkraut for the Thresherman’s Show for many years. He loved spending time with his Grandson and teaching him to fish. He worked hard next to his son on their many remodeling projects. During retirement, Rueben and Idris spent many winters in South Texas where they enjoyed activities and meeting friends from Minnesota, Oregon, and Canada.

Rueben always had a smile and laugh as he would strike up a conversation with almost anyone. He enjoyed just sitting on the front step or on a chair in the driveway to greet all those driving by with a smile and wave.

Survivors include his wife, Idris; son, Randall and wife Judy of Spring, Texas; and grandson, Jason – age 13. He is also survived by brother, Melvin and wife Marguerette of Pomeroy; sister Maxine Thieking of Newell; brother-in-law William Henningson of Albert City; sister-in-law Delores Blomberg of Albert City and sister-in-law Diane Anderson of Laurel, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City at 10:30 AM, Friday, January 27, 2006. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2006, from 6:30-8:30 PM at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City.
