Clifford O. Shold - Dec. 4, 1919 - Aug. 12, 2009

Clifford O. Shold, age 89, of Albert City, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Clifford Oliver Shold, the son of Gottfred and Anna (Bjorklund) Shold, was born on a farm near Albert City, Iowa, on December 4, 1919. He lived his youth on the family farm and began his education at Marshall Township country school. Cliff continued his education in Albert City and was a 1937 graduate of the Albert City High School. He faithfully and proudly served his country during World War II, entering the United States Army on January 28, 1942. While in the service, he was stationed in Arkansas, where he met his future wife, California, Hawaii, Texas, and his longest tour of duty was in Okinawa. He attained the rank of staff sergeant and was honorably discharged on January 17, 1946.

He was united in marriage to Nell Furlow on December 5, 1943, at Fort Smith, Arkansas, and this couple was blessed with four children: Clifford Oliver, Jr., Anna Mae, Theodore Samuel, and Daniel Robert. Following his military service, Cliff and Nell returned to the farm near Albert City where he was engaged in farming with his brother, Avery, for several years. Clifford later continued farming on his own, he managed the Farmers Coop gas station, worked at Brown’s DX, conducted marketing surveys through a telemarketing firm in Schaller, and at the age of 76, he started working for Tyson’s at Sara Lee weighing trucks. During this time, he was also employed at the Pronto in Albert City. Clifford was very industrious and continued weighing trucks until his health no longer permitted it.

Clifford was a devoted member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City where he has sung in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, and had also served there in the capacity of a deacon. He was also a member of the Dyvad-Gustafson American Legion Post # 299 where he served as the post chaplain for many years. The Albert City Lion’s club was another organization that he participated in. Music was a very enjoyable and important part of Clifford’s life and he sang in the Shold-Peterson men’s quartet for many years and was an accomplished saxophone player. Another special interest of Clifford’s were his vegetable and flower gardens. Clifford was proud of his family and he loved his grandchildren very dearly and they brought him so much enjoyment and he made many fond memories for them.

Those who are grateful for having shared in his life included his children: Clifford, Jr. and his wife, Frankye Faye of Munford, Tennessee, Ann Boemig, and her husband, Peter, of Battleboro, Vermont, Theodore (Ted) of Albert City, and Daniel and his wife, Sue, of Albert City, Iowa, his grandchildren: Vicki Lynn Shold-Mills, Carol Marie Hardin, Katrina Anna Boemig, Amy Kirsten Boemig, Kelli Kristine Vick, and Joshua James Shold, two foster grandchildren: David and Jacqueline Velazquez, his great grandchildren: Justin David Shold-Mills, Neysa Mychylae Mills, Clifton Franklin Hardin III, Alycia Nicole Vick, and Tyler Ryan Vick, two sisters: Roselyn Holmberg of Spencer, Iowa, and Maxine Nelson, of Webster City, Iowa, his cat, Betsy, other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nell, and his brother: Avery.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Visitation will take place on Friday, August 14, 2009 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City where the family will be present during that time. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
