Kathy Somers - Oct. 23, 1948 - Aug. 15, 2009
Kathy Somers, age 60, of rural Webb, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at her home.
Nada Kathryn Partlow, the daughter of Y.G. and Cora Lee (Walker) Partlow, was born on October 23, 1948, in Eddy County, Artesia, New Mexico. She attended school in New Mexico on the Navajo Indian Reservation where her father was a carpenter at the Indian Mission School and her mother was a homemaker. The family lived in a trailer most of Kathy’s childhood. Kathy’s sister, Frances, was 12 years older, and she and her husband, Jim, became like second parents to Kathy. Kathy’s brother, David, was 10 years younger than herself and she became like a second mother to David, carrying on the legacy that her sister had started. In 1957, the Partlow’s settled in Farmington, New Mexico, where Kathy completed her education, graduating from high school there in 1966. While in high school, Kathy was president of home economics and lead alto in the choir. Kathy accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of 10 at Sherwood Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas, where her sister was teaching Vacation Bible School. She was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Farmington, New Mexico, and she and her mother became members of that congregation.
Later, Kathy moved to Dallas, Texas, where she met the love of her life, Dennis Dwain Somers. Denny did construction work with Custom Homes in Dallas. Following his building career, Denny entered the telecommunications business where he remains today. Kathy and Denny were married in Dallas, Texas on January 30, 1982. It happened they moved to Gunter, Texas to be close to Denny’s son, Nathan. They attended First Baptist Church where they rededicated their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ. They were taught there by Brother Scott Jordan. In October of 1991, Kathy and Denny moved to their farm near Webb. Throughout their lifetime, they have had many good pastors and Christian friends who have supported them and they praise God for that gift.
As evidenced by her participation in choir during high school, music has been important to Kathy throughout her lifetime. She always enjoyed singing and she worshiped the Lord by singing on various praise teams. Other interests of Kathy’s included doing crafts and scrapbooking. Kathy especially enjoyed dancing and traveling with Denny.
She was a member of the Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove, Iowa. She was also very active in SYC- Special Youth Challenge of Northwest Iowa. This organization provides handicapped children hunting experiences and out of love and compassion for these children, Kathy would have the opportunity to share her faith in Christ with them.
